With advances in medical intervention, treatment is performed to close the holes in patients' hearts or PFOs and LAAs to reduce the risk of recurrent stroke. For example, a nail-like device called an occluder is implanted inside the heart to permanently close the LAA to avoid blood clots.

PFO and LAA closure therapy are used to reduce stroke in patients. It can also reduce the risk of bleeding associated with using blood thinners that have traditionally been used. Most people can thin blood for years without any risk. But because they help prevent blood clots by thinning the blood, even small cuts or scratches will cause excessive bleeding due to daily consumption of these drugs.

Today we have a variety of occluders that can be placed in the heart to close PFO or LAA with a minimally invasive catheter procedure. The procedure involves making a small incision in the leg and inserting a small catheter through the blood vessels to direct the older to the heart. This device closes the opening in the heart and is inserted into the LAA opening in the case of AFA. This closes the LAA and prevents it from releasing clots. A similar procedure is followed to close the PFO. The device is released to remain permanently in the heart, and all catheters are removed to complete the procedure if the cardiologist is satisfied with the condition of the older. Heart tissue grows with the implant, over time, making the device part of the heart. After the procedure, patients can return to normal activities.
